Workshop for children – Disco is a toy: Vinyl records as learning tools with DJ Carlu
On October 25, the children’s workshop Disco is a toy: Vinyl records as learning tools, led by DJ Carlu, will take place from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Varanda Bienal, the outdoor area of the Pavilion.
In 2025, the project Disco é brinquedo, created by teacher and DJ Carlu, celebrates ten years of bringing together music, education, and childhood. Conceived in a public school classroom in São Paulo, the project was born from the sensitive listening of an educator who decided to transform an everyday moment — listening to a record with her students — into a meaningful learning experience. Focusing on child development and on valuing music as a language of learning, the project unfolds in two formats: vinyl DJ sets for children and hands-on workshops with turntables, where kids learn about the equipment, explore sounds, and experience, in practice, the workings of the analog world.
Divided into three parts, the experience begins with an introduction to the turntable and vinyl records. Children learn how the equipment works, discover its components, and explore curiosities about the records and their history. Next, a timeline of music playback devices — from vintage record players to iPods — is assembled, allowing the kids to see and touch the equipment while understanding how technology has evolved over time. The final part is entirely practical: children interact freely with the turntables and playfully experience what it’s like to be a DJ for a day.
Carlu is a DJ, vinyl collector, and music researcher passionate about music from all eras, with a special focus on Brazilian sounds — from classics to the contemporary alternative scene. Raised in a family of musicians, she developed her love for records in childhood. Her collection, built from countless finds in record stores and flea markets, reflects her search for rare sounds, especially amid the revival of LPs. Known for her authentic vinyl sets, Carlu mixes Brazilian music with timeless global hits, inspiring audiences to dance and connect through rhythm.
