Workshop – Estou Refugiado and Renée Abegail – Baby in a Sling
On November 29, there will be a workshop by Renée Abegail in partnership with the Estou Refugiado project called Baby in a Sling. The event takes place from 2 pm to 4 pm at Varanda Bienal, outdoor area of the Pavilion.
Renée Abegail, an artist from Guyana who has lived in Brazil since 2011, creates African-inspired fabric dolls and children’s books. Her work seeks to promote black representation and combat stereotypes, promoting self-esteem and inclusive education. Among her creations is the “Baby in a Sling,” a doll inspired by African women who carry their children, allowing children to explore emotions and play in an affective and educational way. The workshop is a playful and symbolic activity that invites children to paint both sides of the dolls’ faces, one sad and one happy, symbolizing the emotional duality experienced by refugees.
Estou Refugiado was born in 2015 from the conviction that the issue of refugees was shrouded in a dense cloud of misinformation and prejudice. Action had to be taken to change this scenario, giving voice, visibility, and dignity to these human beings who are in great need of support and understanding. In March 2019, it was formally established as a non-governmental organization. With the collaboration of volunteers, human resources professionals, psychologists, communicators, and under the direction of Luciana M G Capobianco, the NGO focuses on integrating refugees into the labor market.
