Tributary – Performance – Batucada – Marcelo Evelin

On September 5 and 6, preview and opening day of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo – Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice, the performance Batucada by Marcelo Evelin will take place. This will be the first event of the Tributaries program, initiatives developed by partners as part of the Bienal’s public program outside the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion. The performance will be held at Casa do Povo, from 8 pm to 9 pm, with tickets distributed one hour before.

Batucada is a performance that Marcelo Evelin developed at Casa do Povo in 2014 at the invitation of Cris Duarte, choreographer in residence at Casa do Povo. However, the performance was never presented in São Paulo. Batucada is a cathartic piece that involves the audience with more than 40 performers, connecting theater and the street in the encounter of carnival, protest, and noise.

In its 36th edition, the Bienal proliferates beyond the pavilion of Ibirapuera Park. The curatorial team has called this outward movement Tributaries. One of the Tributaries is Casa do Povo, which was invited to activate its historic theater – the TAIB – through a series of performances. Closed for 20 years, TAIB is temporarily reopened in the context of the Bienal. However, its renovation is already being planned. Curated by Benjamin Seroussi (artistic director of Casa do Povo) and Daniel Blanga Gubbay (artistic director of Kunstenfestivaldesarts), the program, entitled Ensaio Geral (Dress Rehearsal), proposes to imagine what TAIB will become once renovated and what activities this space will foster. It is a full-scale rehearsal that draws from contemporary artistic practices to think about the future of theater and of theatrical making.
