Thematic visit – Mawali–Taqsim: Improvisation as a Space and Technology of Humanity with Allan da Rosa

15.11 – 15.11.25
Sat, 11 am – 1 pm

On November 15, a thematic visit will take place based on the third Invocation in Zanzibar, Mawali–Taqsim: Improvisation as Space and Technology of Humanity. The event will be held from 11 am to 1 pm in the education – mediation space, located in the ground floor, and is part of Conjugations – Education, within the public program of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo. The activity includes interpretation in Brazilian Sign Language.

Conjugations – Education offers activities that, inspired by playing, dancing, singing, gaming, and storytelling, invite the public to an active and playful immersion in the exhibition — deepening practices of humanity and valuing diverse ways of being and living together. During the activity, the third volume of the educational publication will be distributed.

The third Invocation took place in Zanzibar in February 2025. During the gatherings, participants explored the philosophical and artistic dimensions of taarab — a musical genre that embodies the island’s cultural hybridity and resonates as a profound medium of expression, emotion, and resilience.

Improvisation, a key element of taarab music, serves as a powerful metaphor for human adaptability and interconnectedness. Echoes of Zanzibar’s complex history — as a meeting point of African, Arab, Asian, and European influences — permeate the third Invocation, which understands improvisation not merely as a technical practice but, above all, as a way of being in the world: an attitude toward life that values openness, fluidity, and the creation of possibilities.

In this spirit, the thematic visit will present dialogues between texts and artists featured in the educational publication of the same title, including works by Tanka Fonta, Thania Petersen, Alain Padeau, and Ming Smith.
