Thematic visit – Frank Bowling and the 36th Bienal de São Paulo
On September 9, there will be a thematic visit with the mediation team of the 36th Bienal together with Susi Sahmland and Kate Keohane. The event will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm at the mediation space on the ground floor. It consists on a walkthrough of the exhibition with Susi Sahmland and Kate Keohane (Frank Bowling Studio), proposing connections between Frank Bowling’s works on view at the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, curatorial concepts, and themes such as improvisation, memory, jazz, and soundscapes.
Frank Bowling (Bartica, 1934. Lives and works in London) is a painter whose practice spans abstraction and experimentation with color, light, and geometry. He moved to London in 1953 and graduated from the Royal College of Art, where he received the silver medal for painting. Beginning with figurative work, he later developed a distinctive abstract language marked by large-scale compositions and the expressive possibilities of paint. His work is included in major collections such as Tate (London), the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), among others.
