Musical performance – Dom Salvador
On September 7, the first Sunday of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, there will be a musical performance by Dom Salvador.
Dom Salvador (1938, Rio Claro, São Paulo) is one of the pioneers of Brazilian samba jazz. He arrived at Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro at the invitation of Dom Um Romão in 1961. There, he absorbed the influences of jazz, his Brazilian musical background, and his African roots. He led the Rio65Trio, with bassist Sergio Barrozo and legendary drummer Edison Machado. This was one of the most influential musical groups in the formation of Brazilian jazz. In 1971, Dom Salvador revolutionized the music scene with his Grupo Abolição, formed by black musicians, which combined North American funk and soul with Brazilian samba and choro. The swinging sound and brass phrasing marked an era and influenced the formation of a strand of black music in Brazil, starting with Banda Black Rio, formed by members of Abolição. Dom Salvador moved to the United States in 1973, where he still lives today.
