DJ set – Baile da Sankofa: From Batuque to Afrobeat with DJ Bia Sankofa

On November 8, the DJ set Baile da Sankofa: From Batuque to Afrobeat, by DJ Bia Sankofa, will take place from 5 to 7 pm at the Varanda Bienal, the outdoor area of the Pavilion.

DJ Bia Sankofa, a resident of Cidade Tiradentes in São Paulo’s east side, has been part of the Hip Hop Movement since 1998, performing as MC in the female rap group Sankofa and working as a DJ since 2013. A researcher of African rhythms such as Amapiano, Kizomba, Afrobeats, and Afro soul funk, her career is deeply rooted in the peripheral cultural scene and in dialogue with other artistic languages such as literature, theater, circus, and dance. She has taken part in projects such as Dos Tambores aos Toca-Discos, co-curated the São Paulo DJs Gathering, and performed at events like Virada Cultural and the Circuito Sesc de Artes. Having collaborated in major initiatives including Karol Conká’s opening show and projects with Emicida, she is currently developing Garba Negra, a project that explores the roots and evolution of Black music through vinyl records and books.
