Conjugations – Várzea: spaces for relief – Spatial Strategies, Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin

On September 6, as part of Conjugations, the public program of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo – Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice, which aims to bring together institutions from all over the world to conjoin, explore, and collectively celebrate humanity, the participation of Spatial Strategies, Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, will take place. The event will be held from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Praça das Bandeiras, on the 1st floor.

Starting from the conceptual understanding of várzea as an ecosystem of fertility, multiplicity, and tension, we propose the creation of a relational space of relief for Bienal visitors, Raumstrategien practitioners, and park passersby. Instead of using a physical fabric, the space will be embodied through sound, forming a polyphonic soundscape over a two-hour period in the afternoon. This open-air space will be activated by 10 to 20 participants from the group, and its dimension will be determined by the size of the audience present.

Spatial Strategies is a Master of Arts program at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin – a higher education institution for the arts in Berlin – that emerged from a vision  of an artistic and urban design practice that acts on city space. It tackles the necessity to reconsider the concepts “space” and “publicness” (Öffentlichkeit) in a world that is drastically transforming under the effects of globalisation, and to expand the scope of artistic practices in the social context.
