Mateus Aleluia (1943, Cachoeira, Bahia) is a singer, composer, and researcher of Afro-Brazilian ritualistic musicality, Mateus Aleluia stands out on the world music scene, with his work highlighted by the specialized press in England, France, and the United States. In 2020, he celebrated 50 years of musical career that began in the vocal trio Os Tincoãs, considered a pioneer in consistently bringing to Brazilian popular music the poetic and musical universe of Afro-Brazilian religions such as Candomblé and Umbanda. With sophisticated vocal arrangements, the work of Os Tincoãs is still considered today a unique chapter in the history of Brazilian music. In Angola, where Mateus Aleluia lived for 20 years, he developed his work as a cultural researcher, being recognized for his dedication to research on local cultures. Made a commander in 2019 by Bahia, his home state, he is considered one of the most important cultural figures in Brazil today. In 2020, he was the subject of the documentary film Aleluia, o canto infinito do Tincoã [Aleluia, the infinite song of the Tincoã] and in 2022 he received an honorary doctorate from the Federal University of Recôncavo Baiano. In the same year, his album Afrocanto das Nações – Jêje was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
