Bienal no Mangue Festival – BUHR, Maciel Salú, Mundo Livre S/A, and Paulete Lindacelva
On November 23, the Bienal no Mangue [Bienal at the Mangrove] Festival will take place, featuring BUHR, Maciel Salú, Mundo Livre S/A, and Paulete Lindacelva, as part of the public programming of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo. The event will take place from 3 pm to 8 pm at Praça das Bandeiras, outdoor area of the 1st floor of the Bienal Pavilion.
Singer-songwriter BUHR, known for her fusion of northeastern rhythms with electronic music and poetry, opens the program at 3 pm Then, at 5 pm, Maciel Salú, fiddle player, composer, and heir to one of the most important families in Pernambuco’s popular culture, takes the stage. At 7 pm, the band Mundo Livre S/A, led by Fred Zero Quatro, one of the creators of the movement and author of the manifesto that inspired the festival, brings a sound that remains central to understanding the relevance and timeliness of manguebeat. Between the concerts, at 4 and 6 pm, Paulete Lindacelva will perform a DJ set.
Inspired by the manifesto Caranguejos com cérebro, written in 1992 by vocalist Fred Zero Quatro and DJ Renato L., the Bienal no Mangue Festival seeks — like the manguebeat movement — to act as a virus that infects through the eyes, ears, languages, and sound waves.
An essential part of the curatorial concept of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, the Capibaribe and Beberibe estuary in Recife is brought to the Biennial Pavilion estuary for a day of performances during the holiday weekend on November 23. There will be concerts featuring different generations of Recife music.

The feature films Alice Junior, Era uma vez Verônica, Irmã, Sequestro Relâmpago, the short film Enjaulados, the film A Máquina, and the series Clandestinos e Descolados also feature songs written by BUHR.
Maciel Salú is a singer, composer, fiddle player, researcher, master, and performer of various popular folk dances. Since childhood, he has been immersed in Maracatus, Cavalos Marinhos, Cocos, and Cirandas. Involved in music since 1997, he began his solo career in 2003. Since then, he has participated in projects and events such as Ano do Brasil na França (2005), Projeto Pixinguinha (2007), Europalia.Brasil (2010). In 2023, he released Ogum, the sixth album of his solo career, with strong references to popular culture, Afro-indigenous religions, and Caribbean and Latin American music. Maciel Salú is known for blending ancestral melodies with the culture of the Northeast and contemporary music. In his chords, Maciel brings references to Arabic and North African rebab. In 2010, Maciel Salú was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the Best Regional Brazilian Music Album category with the Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda.
Mundo Livre S/A is a musical group formed in Recife, Pernambuco, in 1984. It stands out for its critical and irreverent lyrics, communicated in a musicality that blends samba and other Brazilian rhythms with international pop and rock culture. Singer-songwriter Fred Zero Quatro – Fred Rodrigues Montenegro – proposes the creation of a group in tune with global pop trends, with danceable songs conceived from a mixture of styles. In a tone of mockery, the group’s name is taken from the speeches of former US President Ronald Reagan, in which he refers to the United States and its allies as the “free world.” The acronym S/A, from the business world, adds an ironic tone. In addition to his brothers Fábio Montenegro (bass) and Xef Tony (drums), the first lineup includes Bactéria (Jadson Vale) on keyboards and Otto on percussion. Band leader, vocalist, and main songwriter, Zero Quatro also plays guitar, cavaquinho, and acoustic guitar. This instrumental lineup indicates a sound that goes beyond the boundaries of 1980s Brazilian rock, which was generally resistant to mixing tones and genres.

A resident DJ of the iconic Mamba Negra party, Paulete also shines at major events in Brazil, such as Gop Tun, ODD, Só Track Boa, and DGTL. Internationally, she has performed at renowned parties and clubs including Pornceptual and Gengen (Berlin), Club Manas and Sala Lisa (Lisbon), and Club Sahika (Istanbul), expanding her impact on global dance music. More than a DJ and producer, Paulete is a multidisciplinary artist. In addition to her work in music, she is active as a visual arts curator and presenter. On Mote, a show broadcast by Cereal Melodia radio, she has welcomed guests such as Novíssimo Edgar, Jup do Bairro, Getúlio Abelha, and Badsista for discussions on gender identity and racial issues, reinforcing her presence as an active voice in the cultural landscape.
