Activation – Sertão Negro – Agroecology for children: experiencing agroecology in a playful and exploratory way

12.10 – 12.10.25
Sun, 3 pm – 5 pm

On October 12, there will be a workshop called Agroecology for children: experiencing agroecology in a playful and exploratory way, as part of a series of activities organized by Sertão Negro at the 36th Bienal de São Paulo. The activity will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Sertão Negro’s work, on the ground floor.

Located in the Goiás savanna and structured on the principles of quilombo and terreiro, Sertão Negro has its foundations in ancestry, agroecology, vernacular architecture, and the emotional and pedagogical exchanges that are built between artists, masters, apprentices, and the surrounding community. The space hosts ongoing activities such as classes in ceramics, engraving, and agroecology, capoeira angola, and artistic residencies that promote encounters between different languages and bodies.

For the 36th Bienal de São Paulo a series of activations is proposed throughout the duration of the exhibition. Each month, two moments will be dedicated to sharing practices and processes that reflect life in the Sertão: whether through body language, sound, conversation, or collective action. These are ten sensory, educational, and performative activations that invite the public to experience, even if only for a moment, the poetic surroundings of the Complexo Sertão Negro.

The workshop proposes a seedling planting activity where children will work with the soil and be invited to think about the metabolic and physiological needs of plants for successful planting. The activity will begin with the presentation of seeds, plants, and roots by the art educators Myllena Camargo Lima and Thainan Menezes Ferrante. Through these elements, together with the children and with the help of a booklet, knowledge about the plant world and food cultivation will be shared. Next, the soil will be prepared by adding fertilizer and limestone, building knowledge about soil fertility. After preparing the soil, planting will take place, and at the end, participants will be able to take their plants home and carefully monitor their growth.

Sertão Verde, a program that is part of the Sertão Negro studio and School of Arts residency, proposes socio-environmental education initiatives as a tool for tackling climate change. The speed of climate change currently affecting the planet means that environmental awareness and education need to start in the early years of life. Thus, the activity aims to promote children’s contact with traditional agricultural knowledge through pesticide-free cultivation and the importance of healthy eating from childhood. The activity aims to provide children with a playful experience of agroecology through the exploration of seeds, flavors, and aromas of medicinal plants, building knowledge about agriculture that respects nature in an educational way.
