Helena Uambembe (Pomfret , 1994) is an artist of Angolan descent. The trajectory of Uambembe’s family, marked by fleeing the Angolan Civil War and the father’s involvement in the 32nd Battalion of the South African Defence Force, is central to the artist’s work. Uambembe graduated from Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa. The artist won the David Koloane Award and completed a residency at Bag Factory Artists’ Studios in Johannesburg, in addition to receiving the Baloise Art Prize and the DAAD Visual Arts Fellowship in Berlin.
